Freaky Nazi Eugenics Rears Its Ugly Head in Brazil

Thursday, January 22, 2009
From the Daily Mail:

"Baffled scientists had been struggling to come up with a reason for the high proportion twins in the tiny Brazilian town of Candido Godoi - most of them blond-haired and blue-eyed."

"A staggering one in five pregnancies there have resulted in the birth of twins - the usual rate is one in 80."

"There is testimony that [Dr. Josef "Angel of Death" Mengele] attended women, followed their pregnancies, treated them with new types of drugs and preparations, that he talked of artificial insemination in human beings, and that he continued working with animals, proclaiming that he was capable of getting cows to produce male twins."

"He attended women who had varicose veins and gave them a potion which he carried in a bottle, or tablets which he brought with him."

Woman Gives Birth to Her Own Appendix

Wednesday, April 9, 2008
From Time Magazine:

"Last month, in an American surgical first, doctors at the University of California, San Diego, removed the appendix of a 24-year-old patient through her vagina. Surgeons Santiago Horgan and Mark Talamini made a small incision in the wall of the patient's vagina, through which they passed surgical tools and a small camera to the appendix, removing the organ through the same incision. Surgeons also made a small cut in the bottom of the patient's bellybutton and inserted another camera through it to help guide surgery. The procedure took 50 minutes from start to finish, 20 minutes longer than a standard laparoscopic appendectomy."

In all seriousness, though, this promises to revolutionize surgery.

Grandma Needs a Bath; Call the Robot!

From Reuters:

"Robots could fill the jobs of 3.5 million people in graying Japan by 2025, a thinktank says, helping to avert worker shortages as the country's population shrinks."

"Caregivers would save more than an hour a day if robots helped look after children, older people and did some housework, it added. Robotic duties could include reading books out loud or helping bathe the elderly."

Yeah, so this promises to scare the bejeezus out of the "science has gone too far" crowd. At least until the Raelians finally produce that clone they promised us...

Fuck a Duck!

Wednesday, March 26, 2008
From the Guardian:

"The strange case of the homosexual necrophiliac duck pushed out the boundaries of knowledge in a rather improbable way when it was recorded by Dutch researcher Kees Moeliker."

"Ducks behave pretty badly, it seems. It is not so much that up to one in 10 of mallard couples are homosexual - no one would raise an eyebrow in the liberal Netherlands - but they regularly indulge in 'attempted rape flights' when they pursue other ducks with a view to forcible mating. 'Rape is a normal reproductive strategy in mallards,' explains Mr Moeliker."

"As he recounts in his seminal paper, 'The first case of homosexual necrophilia in the mallard anas platyrhynchos,' he was in his office in the Natuurmuseum Rotterdam, when he was alerted by a bang to the fact a bird had crashed into the glass facade of the building. 'I went downstairs immediately to see if the window was damaged, and saw a drake mallard (anas platyrhynchos) lying motionless on its belly in the sand, two metres outside the facade. The unfortunate duck apparently had hit the building in full flight at a height of about three metres from the ground. Next to the obviously dead duck, another male mallard (in full adult plumage without any visible traces of moult) was present. He forcibly picked into the back, the base of the bill and mostly into the back of the head of the dead mallard for about two minutes, then mounted the corpse and started to copulate, with great force, almost continuously picking the side of the head.'"
