Given this magazine's rather strong ties to Montreal, the recent shooting at Dawson College has hit us pretty hard. Knowing people who have worked at or attended the school only makes such a story all the more unsettling.

A brief glance at Kimveer Gill's alleged weblog at VampireFreaks.com may reveal a little bit about the gunman's motives. Although the Montreal police haven't yet identified a motive, one need only to take a glance at Gill's recent entries on school bullying and law enforcement to make a few educated guesses. A sampling:

September 12 (an entry titled "People are so ignorant"):

Fuck people
Fuck Life
Fuck god

Later that same day, in an entry titled "Stop High school Bullying (FUCK THE JOCKS)":

Stop High School Bullying

Stop making fun of each other because of the clothes you wear, or the way people talk or act, or any other reasons you make fun of each other.

It's all the jocks' fault

JOCKS ARE NO GOOD

So Just Stop...............o.k.???"

Eight minutes later, in an entry titled "FUCK YOU":

Stop Bullying

It's not only the bully's fault you know!!

It's the teachers and principals fault for turning a blind eye, just cuz it's not their job. You fuckers are pathetic. It's the police's fault for not doing anything when people conplain (oops, my mistake, the cops are corrupt sons of whores, so it's not like they can do anything about it.)

FUCK THE POLICE

It's society's fault for acting like it's normal for people to be assholes to each other. Society disgusts me.

It's everyone's fault for being so apathetic towards fucking everything that doesn't affect them personally.

FUCK YOU SOCIETY.

Then, the very next day, this.

Now, The Montreal Gazette reports that the gunman "last logged in [to the website] four days ago, on Sept. 10 at 4:54 a.m" but members of the online Goth community provide the above link to a blog that does have posts after that time. And, if these are Gill's words, there may well be some "motive" hidden there.

Aside from the rather disgusting moments where Canadian bigotry rears its ugly head (countless comments of the "this only happens in the U.S." variety), it seems the community has largely handled a terrible situation with the sort of poise and swift police response in which Montreallers might find some solace. Our hearts go out to the victims of this tragedy and, from what it seems, Dawson College has a strong community willing to work together to rebuild. We wish them the best.
